Gators Swamp CapitolTALLAHASSEE, Fla. » In an unprecedented demonstration of Gator pride and spirit, nine University of Florida Trustees, joined by UF President Charles Young and by members of the senior administration, spent Wednesday, March 6, meeting with Florida legislators and with government officials in a concentrated, one-day capital blitz. Supporting the intensive effort to bring UF's message to Tallahassee was strong representation from various UF colleges and programs as well as the attendance of new UF head football coach Ron Zook and past Gator and NFL Hall of Famer Jack Youngblood. Two resolutions honoring the university and its academic and athletic programs were each read and passed in both houses. Government administrators and legislators had a one-on-one opportunity to hear UF priorities as well as enjoying the chance to pose with UF mascots Albert and Alberta. The night before UF Day, Trustee Cindy O'Connell welcomed Gator friends and supporters including trustees, UF Alumni Association President Delphine Jackson and incoming President Dave Mica, to a reception at the O'Connell Farm. Brain, Behavior and Evolution, UF researchers argue that manatees use
small hairs on their body as "tiny antennas" that pick up information
about water currents, nearby landscape and the presence of other animals.
Such an "underwater distance tactile system" is found in fish,
which monitor underwater surroundings through sensory pores set along
their bodies in twin lateral lines. But the results represent the first
time such a system has been documented in mammals, the scientists say.

A team composed of researchers from UF, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and United created a mathematical model that helps the airline identify the most profitable assignment of planes to flight legs and determine "through connections" between flights. The model, which relies on complex algorithms, is predicted to save the airline as much as $25 million annually and improve customer satisfaction once it is fully implemented.
